Like a modern tale: Valeria Atkeys and Nakury meet the Founder in South Italy

Here at SO WOW MAGAZINE, we are always in search of rare gems, souls that shine like stars in the universe of art. And so, on an ordinary day in 2018, Valeria Atkeys caught our attention; this story is a journey we first embarked on with our minds and through her sound, and then, finally and unexpectedly, in person.

When I first interviewed Valeria, I did it through a computer screen, in a virtual embrace that allowed us to glimpse the depth of her music. But for this editorial project, such experiences are fortunately nothing strange or surprising. It is in this society that the surprise of making such a connection becomes a reality. A story of music and attunement; waves that do not travel on canonical human frequencies, absolutely not.

This time, Valeria Atkeys was accompanied by Nakury, a Costa Rican MC who proudly sings the values that have nourished her. But let’s go in order: by chance, Valeria and I reconnected on Instagram while she and Nakury were in Switzerland for their European tour. Following our chat, we decided to join forces and organize a last-minute trip here to Foggia, in Puglia, Italy, before participating in the Costa Rica Musicfest in Paris, which is happening today.

It was a decision that spoke of the free and hippie ethic that evidently was bringing us even closer; that philosophy of living freely but with a keen awareness of the world's complexities.

The streets of Foggia, with their historical charm and bustling markets, would soon be the stage for an adventure that promised new connections, music, and memories. Between a chord and some memorable mishaps, we strolled through the historic center, and our conversations flowed as easily as the wine from local cellars and the Orecchiette Pistacchio e Mortadella at #DaAntonello Restaurant.

Moments of pure, unadulterated freedom; a reminder that, although the world can be unpredictable and challenging, there is always room for spontaneity and joy, like that offered by the Mato Grosso project in Foggia, which organizes convivial pizza dinners to support aid projects in the most needy situations in Latin America. What better stage could we have wished for? Nakury had her first real Italian pizza. #PuraVida, as they say ;)

For their part, Valeria Atkeys and Nakury delighted this delicate audience with their melodies, both familiar and innovative. The evening ended with Valeria and me in front of one of the fine drinks at Lazy Cat in Foggia, realizing that despite the great distance, we already knew each other.

The following days were marked by a great civic fervor that moved to ensure the girls could perform with all the necessary respect for their art, overcoming even some lodging issues resolved with the cordiality that characterizes this land, often neglected and abandoned by the state.

A special thanks goes to the Emmaus Community of Foggia and Piano B (Bar & B’n’B) who allowed these incredible artists to have the time to savor this land.

The second and temporarily last performance in Foggia took place right at Lazy Cat, with an audience that did not expect to attend this performance full of art and sentiment, under a Palestinian flag and waving rainbow fans; the audience spontaneously left them donations—how wonderful!

In the end, Valeria Atkeys and Nakury’s journey to Foggia was more than just a detour; it was a testament to the power of music and human connection. It reminded us that no matter how far we travel or how different our backgrounds may be, the language of art can unite us all. Their music, born from a mix of cultures and experiences, resonated deeply with the people of Foggia, leaving an indelible mark on the city and its inhabitants.

This encounter was not just a fleeting moment but a beautiful chapter in a larger story of exploration, creativity, and shared humanity. It is a reminder that, even in a world full of uncertainties and challenges, there is always room for spontaneity, joy, and the unexpected beauty of meeting kindred spirits. As Valeria and Nakury continue their journey, they carry with them the spirit of Foggia, a place that welcomed them with open arms and hearts.

Their story inspires us to embrace the surprises of life, to appreciate the connections we make along the way, and to remain open to the magic that can happen when we dare to follow our passions.
