The story of Miss Ruby Ribbon - Rebecca Carrington

A riot of fantasies that give free rein to the imagination, Rebecca shows off her talent and vision with a collection inspired by childhood memories. An incredible adventure into Miss Ruby’s world!

How did fashion designing become your life?

I've always drawn characters since I was a child, and I've always wondered how they would dress or act in their own world and their story. So, when I was in education my passion for creativity was still strong, and one of the only things I enjoyed doing. From then on I studied Fashion at university and it's been important to me ever since. I found a place to start expressing myself through it. 

What's the concept of your latest collection?

My collection, 'The Story of Miss Ruby Ribbon' was inspired by my childhood and pet parrot, 'Ruby' who passed away when I turned 21 years old. It felt like a signal that my childhood had come to an end, which made me sad. So I decided to celebrate it. 

I created 'Ruby' into a female narrative about a girl who is stuck in a rut working as a cashier in a supermarket. She goes back home, and plays with her old childhood toys at 21 years old. She plays with one of her favourite toys, a cash register, when a code combination transports her into a new world called, 'Childhood City'. When she's there she meets her inner child, 'Miss Lola Child', her two childhood pets a Dalmatian dog called, 'Kid' and a parrot called 'Dream'. They live in a pink castle built up high in the sky with toys underneath it. She also meets an evil presence in the city who lives in the sky called, 'Baddie'. He throws out alcohol, weapons and illegal substances into the city, which makes all the toys go crazy! Ruby Ribbon is there to save them all, and learn the ways of her youth.

What do inspire you the most?

I'm inspired by lots of things. I collect a lot of inspiration from everything in life. But mostly I like to look inside myself, and see what I'm feeling. Emotions are inspiring to me. 

What kind of person do you imagine wearing your creations?

I like to imagine anyone can wear my creations if they feel some sort of connection to them. That might be through the aesthetic, the shapes, the concept or the narrative etc whoever feels drawn to them.

What's the future of fashion according to you?

I think the future of fashion is more about sustainability and technology. It's less about what money you can make, and about how you can move it forward with caring about your impact and the planet. I think it will focus on design in more depth without creating the garments physically unless there's a reason to. 3D and fashion film can bring your creations to life maybe we will virtually be able to attend fashion shows without being there physically like with VR headsets. Maybe fashion will become a video game we can play on an app and can re-live the designs over and over again. 

What's your next project?

I've been working on a new collection, which explores emotions and life in more depth. Like a diary entry this collection I'm working on is very personal and raw.
