Female gaze - JIMINLEE

Eros and the human body as a vehicle for the expression of the concept of free manifestation of one's self. Jaminlee shows us a really suggestive collection.

How did you start your career as a fashion designer?

My BA major was “Art and Craft”. I created art pieces using fabrics, yarns and etc during this course. I wanted to create something practical and that was a garment. Fashion design was an aggregate of my desire. So I decided to do double major with Fashion design. After graduating college I wanted to learn more about fashion design so I decided to go study abroad at Fashion School.  My first design school was a Central Saint Martin in major Graduate Diploma in Fashion. I trained on how to handle the projects. It was a part of the process to train to be a designer. After that I got into Parsons  School of Design in MFA Fashion Design and Society in 2017. I could find my identity as a fashion designer during this course. I finally graduate in 2019 with my debut collection “FEMALE GAZE” at NewYork FashionWeek SS20.

What's the concept of your latest collection?

My last collection title was “Female gaze”. I wanted to express women’s desire through male body. I am from Korea which has conservative culture especially for women but since I moved to NY I realized that I have a interest in subject of sex and desire. There are more stories at the link which I attached.

What kind of person do you imagine wearing your creations?

Person who want to express their own beauty and identity. I believe every person has their own beauty and I want people knows about it.

Do you have any suggestion for all the young designers out there?

You might struggle during your journey as a fashion designer but don’t be afraid and just be yourself.

How does the place you live in affect your style?

I moved around the city since 2015. I was in Seoul, London and New York. When I arrived in NY in 2017 it was life changing for me. The city inspires me to find myself as a designer. I realized that I have interest in subject of sex and desire while I exploring NYC’s culture. The most big influence was a life drawing class. I could break free from Korean conformity through drawing nude male bodies.

What's your next project?

My next project might be an extension of my last collection. I want to explore more about human body forms, erotisim and desire.
