In this interview, we will explore his creative journey, his sources of inspiration and future projects that promise to redefine the landscape of contemporary fashion.
Tell me about your background. Why did you pursue the fashion design career?
For as long as I can remember, fashion and creativity have captivated me. Growing up, I wasn’t sure what path I’d take, but after my first year in design school, it became clear - I couldn’t live without designing. It’s my way of tapping into the world of imagination and expressing emotions, and I realised that’s at the core of what it means to be a fashion designer.
How would you describe the essence and philosophy of your brand?
I believe we live in a world that often feels disconnected from emotions. Through my designs, I want to denude our inner side and symbolically portray the emotional instability, love, pain, and fear we are all experiencing. I aim to make these feelings visible through forms, textures, colours, and cuts.
What kind of emotions do you hope to evoke in the audience through your designs?
My work has been described as a balance of contrasts that evoke discomfort while simultaneously drawing you into a world of imagination.
What role does visual storytelling play in your creative process?
Storytelling is a major part of my creative process. Each look in the collection feels like a chapter in a book. I love figuring out how to weave that narrative together with the garments so I can share a story in the collection video or photoshoot. I’m inspired to create a multimedia presentation that not only shows the designs but also tells you a story that I hope resonates with you on an emotional level.
How do you choose themes and concepts for your collections?
It always varies depending on what inspires me. Sometimes it’s a specific emotion I’ve experienced or seen in others, other times it’s a social issue, a piece of art, or something similar. I always start with in-depth research, which helps me develop and shape the concept.
How do you integrate experimentation with tradition in your creative vision?
When I design, I like to mix traditional techniques with more experimental ones. I often work with knitting and embroidery but combine them with unconventional materials or digital prints to create something different.
How does your creative process evolve from the initial idea to the final collection?
For each collection, I focus my research on a specific part of the human anatomy. At the same time, I experiment with materials, explore textures, and develop ideas through sketches and collages, often surrounding myself with inspiring images and references. I also dive into the work of others, gaining insights that help shape my vision. Eventually, the concept becomes clear and structured, and I can see how it will translate into a full collection. That’s when production begins. As a conceptual designer, the emotional value of each piece is key, and every decision I make in the process is guided by the defined concept.
What is the importance of collaboration with other creatives in your design process?
Collaboration is really important for me, especially in post production process of the collections. Photographers, Make Up artists, hairstylists, models - they all bring a vision to life.
What are your future plans for the brand, and what can we expect from upcoming collections?
I have a new collection coming out in October 2024 (The New Moon is OUT! - editor's note), and I’m excited to be moving my brand to Berlin by the end of this year. I’m also in talks with a few concept stores about showcasing the new collection.
Tell me an inspiring song for you.
"Lacrimosa" by Zbigniew Preisner was introduced to me by one of my best friends many years ago, and it evoked an explosion of emotions. Every time I hear it, I experience the same powerful feelings.
